What is Work Based learning?Work based learning takes you out of your usual classroom to enable you to develop the skills needed in the employment of your choice.
You will attend our city centre site for two days and a well matched work placement for one day each week. (This day may vary depending on individual school timetables). No training takes place during half terms and holidays. If you are pre-16 student you will attend the centre on only one day a week with work experience included in that time where applicable. How do I get to my Training Provider and work placement?Transport will be organised by your school. Most students use public transport which gives easy access to the training centre. Work placements will be found close to your home where possible. What time does the training day start and end?We open at 9.00am and end at 4.00pm but obviously bus timetables vary from different part of Plymouth so there is some flexibility. Will I need to wear special clothes? For classroom session your everyday clothing is acceptable but your work placement may wish you to wear a uniform or special protective clothing. This will all be supplied if it is necessary. What about breaks and lunchtimes? We have two refectory areas where you can eat lunch and take breaks. There are hot and cold drinks and snack machines. The training centre has a wide variety of takeaways and snack bars within easy reach or you can bring your own lunch with you each day. What will the course involve and what qualifications will I get?You will learn to work as part of a team, how to work safely and about your job choice in more detail. NVQs are nationally recognised qualifications that are built up by working on units. You are assessed in the work place to confirm your competence in each task. What will I do on two days a week when I am back in school/college?You will continue to work towards GCSEs and/or Key Skills and you may have time to do some of your course work. What opportunities will this course open up for me?You can progress to a higher level of National Vocational Qualification either in our centre or with another Training Provider. If your work placement offers you employment we can talk to them about a Modern Apprenticeship scheme. Some Universities accept NVQs as part of their entry requirements or you could go to your local College of Further Education . We and your School/College TVC Co-ordinator will be happy to give you advice about the various options open to you. |
