What you'll Learn

This qualification is for anyone who would like to work in animal care. The programme will suit those who are just starting out as well as those with some experience.

This qualification has been specifically designed to develop the knowledge and skills to prepare you for employment within an Animal Care setting. The programme covers a wide range of skills, including: promote and maintain the health and well-being of animals, deliver basic treatments to animals, select and prepare accommodation for animals, control and restrain animals, prepare and provide feed and water to animals and provide controlled exercise opportunities for animals.

You wish to gain a practical qualification in animal care through vocational study and have an interest in moving into employment in an animal care setting. The structure of this qualification provides learners with the flexibility to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills depending upon their designated career pathway

On completion of this qualification you can progress into full time employment into one of the following sectors: animal care and welfare, zoos or wildlife establishments, pet care and Retail, animal welfare enforcement and animal training.

You will learn in our training centre within one of our fully equipped classrooms with access to our many onsite animals, including ferrets, hamsters, degus, geckos, stick insects, rabbits and many more. For each unit your assessor observes and asks questions as you perform tasks to assess your practical, animal handling skills. Your understanding of theory will be carried out within the classroom.

Entry Requirements

Students will be invited to attend an informal interview which will support your application,  ideally, you should aim to have English, maths and a science at grade 4 or above.

Co-funded £2,212.50

Funding is available depending on your circumstances. FREE if you are either:

  • Aged 16-18
  • Aged 19+ Employed and earn less than £16,009.50
  • Aged 19+ Unemployed and in receipt of benefits
