What you will learn
This qualification covers a wide range of skills to prepare you for a career as a Nail Technician. The topics covered include: application of nail enhancements using liquid and powder, UV gel nail enhancements, use of e-file, colour gel application and advanced nail art techniques.

Ideal if
You want to become an advanced Nail Technician or up-skill from Level 2 to Level 3. This course will provide you with the set of skills needed to be a Professional Nail Technician. The Level 3 qualification builds on existing knowledge and understanding of nail services gained at Level 2, enabling learners to expand the scope of their technical skills for employment as a
Nail Technician.

What to expect
You will learn at our training centre within a realistic working environment. By the end of your qualification, you’ll be demonstrating your skills on paying clients. All learners will cover the mandatory core units which will allow you to experience the different skills required to work within the Nail industry. The content of this qualification consists of all the required elements to work effectively as a Nail Technician including health and safety, client care and communication, applying and maintaining nail enhancements using either UV gel or liquid and powder and how to promote products, services and teamwork skills. You will need to complete employer engagement and work experience during the qualification. Your understanding of theory will be tested by the completion of an end trade test and written exam.

What next
This qualification can help you to move into employment or self-employment as a Nail Technician or develop you to become a senior member of staff. It also acts as a route into qualifications such as: Level 4 Diploma in Management Practice. You could also train in the Hair and Beauty sector to allow you to offer your clients more treatments and gain higher economic well-being.

Work placements

Are required for students aged 16- 18 on a study Programme 19+ students do not need to have a placement. 

Work placements are part of the programme; this will be in a salon to help you see how the day to day running of a salon is structured. All assessments take place in our Nail Bar. Students practice on each other to start with before moving on to real clients.

What it feels like to be a student
Class group sizes are between 10 to 20 students, with a dedicated tutor. Support staff are on site, such as pastoral care, finance and careers advice. “Brilliant course, everything is explained in detail each lesson. Teacher has all the time in the world to help you”. Students come from a variety of schools across Plymouth, they all help each other out and develop a really good bond over the year, encouraging each other to achieve. Most students never want to leave and stay on to complete a full range of Beauty courses and gain further qualifications.

09:00 – 16:00  Tuesday and Wednesday

Salary and Career expectations
You could earn up to £30,000 a year as a qualified Nail Technician. With experience you could manage a salon or start your own business. You could work with photographers, fashion designers or TV companies, preparing nails for photo shoots. You could work in a salon at a health spa or from home. Nationally there has been a big increase in the number of people who work in the sector. Some Nail technicians have high profiles on Social Media as brand influencer’s.

Nail Technician make in United Kingdom circa £24,000 / Annual, based on 424 salaries. The average nail technician salary in the United Kingdom is £24,000 per year or £12.31 per hour. Entry level positions start at £21,450 per year while most experienced workers make up to £47,600.

Uniform requirements
Once you have enrolled we will order beautiful tunics for you to wear each day, you will need to provide black trousers and black shoes, you really will look like a Nail Technician
Professional.

You will need to have achieved a Level 2 related course or ideally have GCSE’s grade 5/6 in English, Maths and a Science

Level 3​ courses fully funded if you are: ​

  • if  you are a school leaver or in 6th form
  • are 19 or over and do not already have a level 3 qualification
  • already have a level 3 qualification or higher but earn below the National Living Wage annually (£20,319 from April 2023)
  • already have a level 3 qualification or higher but are unemployed
