Working week:

Monday to Friday with some weekend work 10am - 3pm

Vacancy short description:

To work as part of the multidisciplinary team to provide individualised care for patient and their families/carers. Work with the nursing team ensuring high quality care is delivered within the Inpatient unit. This post holder will be enrolled in the Level 2 Apprenticeship standard for Adult Care with Achievement Training.

Vacancy Description:

Your role will include, but may not be limited to -

  • Assist with the morning tea trolley
  • To help with feeds at lunch time if required
  • To contribute in the serving of food
  • To be aware of the resident's dietary needs and respond to their comments and requests in respect of the menu
  • To hold a suitable food and hygiene certificate

Activities 14:00 - 16:00

  • Work closely with residents, staff and others involved in the organising and the running of events
  • Investigate, develop and extend the range of activities and interests that the home can offer
  • To help set up activities and help residents with activities set on the day
  • Afternoon tea trolley

Evening KA: 16:00 - 19:00

  • Preparing hot and cold meals relevant for the residents
  • To contribute in the serving of food to rooms/dining room and collect same
  • To wash/dry dishes and make sure the kitchen is clear for the next shift


  • Bed making and general tidying of the home
  • Any other tasks Seniors request within the Support Assistant's capability

Training to be provided:

You will receive specific on the job training from the employer in your work place. Off the job training will be provided by Achievement Training in the following areas:

  • Health Care Support Worker Level 2
  • Diploma in Care
  • Care Certificate
  • Apprentices without Level 1 Maths and English will need to achieve this level and take the test for Level 2.

Skills required:

Essential -

  • An aptitude for caring for unwell people with kindness, compassion, dignity and respect
  • Good verbal communication skills to enable communication within team and with members of the public
  • Willingness to develop skills to be able to meet personal and intimate care needs of patients

Physical Skills -

  • Manual handling of patients and equipment on a regular basis for varying periods and at times working in a limited space

Planning and Organisation -

  • Use resources effectively and efficiently and being mindful of financial constraints associated with care delivery
  • Attend regular team meetings
  • Contribute to the maintenance of accurate and contemporaneous written and electronics in accordance with Hospice policies
  • Support the work of the team by fulfilling an equal share of the workload. This will require a combination of planning own workload and following directions from the shift or team leader
  • Work mainly with defined procedures and policies, using own initiative when necessary i.e. assisting patients with routine matters but referring more non-routine matters to a registered nurse or nurse in charge as required
  • React to expected situations appropriately and escalate and report accordingly

  • Responsibility for own personal development and motivation to complete Level 2 Apprenticeship standard by achieving units listed
  • Can demonstrate an insight into the role of the care assistant

  • Experience of demonstrating reliability and trustworthiness
  • Interpersonal skills to work effectively in a team and maintain positive relationships with other staff and patients

Qualifications required:

GCSE Grade C or above in Maths and English or equivalent

Future prospects:

On completion of the Apprenticeship, the employer may offer you a permanent contract as you will have learnt the necessary skills and become a valued member of staff. Progression opportunities may also include advanced and Higher apprenticeships, including:

  • NVQ Level 3 equivalent - 2 A Levels
  • NVQ Level 4 equivalent - Higher Education Certificate/BTEC
  • NVQ Level 5 equivalent - Higher Education Diploma/Foundation Degree
